Valley Pike Farm Market Wedding Morgan and Zach

You may have already seen Morgan’s stunning bridal portraits if not, you can check them out here ...today I am sharing some images from Morgan and Zach’s amazing wedding!

Morgan and Zach’s wedding was the perfect combination of a classic church ceremony, with an elegant reception at the Valley Pike Farm Market. When I arrived in the morning, the girls were already excitedly getting ready.I was able to get right into the mix with my camera, capturing some images of the ladies getting all dolled up. The bridal suite at Valley Pike is BEAUTIFUL, which just topped off the morning!

When we arrived at Lebanon Church of the Brethren for the ceremony we rolled right into Morgan’s first look with her dad. I don’t always get emotional at weddings; but I couldn’t help but get teary eyed watching Morgan and her dad see each other, it was just so sweet!

Morgan and Zach’s ceremony did not disappoint. The minister at Lebanon COB, Matthew Fike, did an amazing job and had the congregation laughing the whole time; while still adding just the right touch of sweetness and sentiment.

Following the ceremony Morgan and Zach’s community of friends, family, and crossfit buddies gathered for a beautiful reception at The Granary at Valley Pike. The Granary was the perfect venue for their celebration with it’s exposed beams, old barn doors, and romantic lighting. After heartfelt toasts, and delicious (and gorgeous!) cake by Buttercream Dreams; Morgan changed into another beautiful dress. She danced and celebrated with her new husband, and all their loved ones. It was the perfect end to the perfect day!

King Family Vineyard Wedding Caroline and Peter

It didn't take me long to fall in love with King Family Vineyards. This venue is gorgeous. Even though it rained, and Caroline and Peter had to move their ceremony indoors it was still a beautiful day! The fog on the mountains was so neat for portraits. The getting ready spaces, and the indoor reception are all so well thought out and lovely at King Family Vineyards.

Caroline and Peter met at UVA. So holding their wedding near Charlottesville was special for the couple. Caroline is very talented at digital design. She designed their wedding invitations, programs, and created a custom framed graphic for the wedding. The details of this wedding were well planned.

Caroline and Peter decided to do a first look at their wedding. This allowed them to enjoy all of their cocktail hour with their guests, which is a great option for other brides to consider too. Caroline and Peter's guests and family were all so sweet, and lively. As soon as the DJ welcomed people to the dance floor everyone was up and moving. Of course the DJ played sweet Caroline and everyone crowded around and serenaded Caroline. It was perfect! It was a pleasure celebrating with Caroline and Peter!

Outdoor Charlottesville Wedding Erica & Dusty

Photographing a photographers wedding makes one ultra considerate of all the details, and the need to make sure your client is happy! Erica is a wedding photographer in the Charlottesville area. I am so honored that she entrusted me with her wedding photography. She had the day so well planned, and she had a million beautiful details.

Erica took the plunge and planned an ALL outdoor wedding. We were a little worried of rain earlier in the day, but we ended up with cloudy weather all day. Which is PERFECT for photos! Erica and Dusty (her groom) are both interested in vintage vehicles and that made for some awesome portraits! I loved the vintage mustang, the motorcycles, and the truck! I told Erica I felt like her wedding was a styled shoot.

Erica and Dusty have a fun relationship filled with a lot of laughter, and yet a lot of understanding for each other. It was a complete joy to photograph this wedding! After this wedding and throughout the planning process I feel like Erica has become more of a friend than a client. It's so nice to work with such amazing and generous people. Erica started the wedding day off gifting me an engagement package filled with thoughtful gifts. It doesn't get much better than that!

Sorella Farms Wedding Ashley and Ben

It was wonderful to be back at Sorella Farms again this year. It is one of my favorites venues. The staff at Sorella are so helpful, and organized. The farm itself is gorgeous for photos. I don't think there's a spot that isn't picture perfect! You might remember this couple, Ashley and Ben, from their awesome engagement session at the Peaks of Otter. They are a joy to work with! Ashley loves pictures, so we really lucked out with the rain. That's a funny thing to say on a wedding day, because most of the time we don't want it to rain. Because it rained on their wedding day, the couple pushed back their ceremony about a half an hour to make sure it wasn't going to rain on the guests at the outdoor ceremony site called, "I do Hill". With the extra time before the ceremony we were able to take A LOT of newlywed portraits after their First Look. It is so nice to have extra time for portraits with the bride and groom! We were able to venture down to the pond area, and it was gorgeous. Right after it rains all the colors seem to pop! Ashley and Ben's wedding reception was not only beautiful but fun! There was a photo booth for the guests, and the dj was great! He even stepped onto the dance floor to teach a few dances. I am so happy for this couple, and I can't wait to photograph them throughout the next few years. Congratulations Ashley and Ben!

One Eleven South Main Bridal Session

Now that Morgan and Zach were just married this weekend, it is time to post some of Morgan's bridal session. Her dress was so uniquely beautiful, and Morgan's smile is gorgeous. One Eleven South Main was a great location for Morgan's session we felt like we were in Tuscany! I am looking forward to sharing more bridal portraits from Morgan and Zach's wedding day this week!

Lexington, Virginia Engagement Session Jessie and Patrick

Lexington, Virginia Engagement Session Jessie and Patrick

I met Jessie and Patrick in Lexington for their engagement session, and I fell in love with the town. I can't wait to have a session there again! I'm not really sure why I haven't been taking pictures there for years. We started the session at a local fraternity headquarters, and ventured over to Washington and Lee University. Jessie and Patrick are a fun couple to be around, and I couldn't help but think that they represent the perfect sophisticated, southern couple. I am so thrilled to be working with them, and happy that I will be celebrating their marriage with them in July.

Sherando Lake & Raven's Roost Engagement Lindsay and Josh

Sherando Lake & Raven's Roost Engagement Lindsay and Josh

Lindsay and Josh made the drive from Leesburg for their engagement session! We had to reschedule once because of this spring rain. Thankfully the day they drove in for the session was gorgeous! We started the session at Sherando Lake, and ended with some beautiful sunset shots at Raven's Roost. One of my favorite locations! I love the mountain views. Lindsay and Josh are both geologists that love the outdoors, so their session was perfect for them! I photographed this session almost entirely with my 70-200mm lens. That has quickly become one of my favorites for a beautiful creamy background with a sharp focus. I loved Lindsay's colorful dresses that she chose for the session. So excited to see this couple on their wedding day in September!

Downtown Staunton Engagement Session | Jessi & Majestic

Downtown Staunton Engagement Session | Jessi & Majestic

Who else is ready to do their engagement session at sunrise after seeing this post!? Jessi and Majestic met me at 6:30 am to start their session in downtown Staunton. They both looked wide awake regardless of the hour! In general, the best light for engagement sessions are right at sunrise and sunset. It gives that pretty soft glowy light, and often warm light that looks so pretty in photos.

During this session, we decided to walk up to Beverly street to get a shot with the Clock Tower in the background. It worked out because there isn't a lot of traffic early on a Sunday in Staunton! Side note: I love it when couples are willing to walk during their engagement sessions...I always tell future brides to wear shoes that are cute, but comfortable for the session.

After we shot in downtown Staunton we ventured out to Middlebrook to take some photos with Jessi's handsome horse KC. It's always nice when engagement sessions are made more personal with fur babies! I loved this session so much!

North Mountain Outfitter Wedding - Swoope, Virginia | Heather and Jason

North Mountain Outfitter Wedding - Swoope, Virginia | Heather and Jason

Jason and Heather's fun pavilion wedding wasn't stopped by a rainy day. We were able to sneak outside for pictures despite the on and off rain and the chilly weather. Jason is a youth pastor at a local church, so the couple promised their vows surrounded by their church families, and youth. It's always fun to shoot a wedding where most of the guests know each other! The couple's joy, and thankfulness for finding one another was written all over their faces. I will never get tired of capturing sweet love like this.

Charlottesville Engagement Session Darden Towe Park | Caleigh and Cameron

Charlottesville Engagement Session Darden Towe Park | Caleigh and Cameron

Caleigh and Cameron met 5 years ago during their freshman year of college at Elon University, and this summer they are getting married! Caleigh and Cameron had picked out a few Charlottesville parks for their engagement session, but we ended up staying at Darden Towe Park the entire time! We found a lot of variety at this one park. Caleigh has a great fashion sense, all of her outfit choices were beautiful. I am looking forward to Cameron and Caleigh's wedding celebration surrounded by their family and friends in August.

Deborah and Ryan | Ash Lawn - Highland

Deborah and Ryan | Ash Lawn - Highland

We couldn't have special ordered a more beautiful April day for Deborah and Ryan's wedding at Ash Lawn. President Monroe's Highland is a great wedding venue with well groomed gardens and many picturesque locations. Deborah and Ryan are both very musical people so naturally there was a wonderful string quartet and a great DJ for the evening. The sunset was timed perfectly for the couples portraits after a sweet ceremony where Deborah and Ryan promised to serve and love each other for life. This was the perfect wedding to kick off the 2017 wedding season!

Looking for an Assistant

Looking for an Assistant

This wedding season I am looking for someone that is interested in working with me! I am searching for the right person to come to weddings to assist with wedding day needs. This includes moving equipment, organizing portraits, pinning boutonnieres (because that always happens on wedding days), styling detail photos, and moving the wedding dress to a pretty location to photograph. There’s so much that happens on a wedding day, having a second set of hands is going to be amazing!

This individual will also be asked to assist with office tasks. This includes posting on social media, preparing blog posts, and creating documents through inDesign and Word.

I am looking for an upbeat creative personality, that is available most Saturday’s beginning June 3rd and can devote one day a week to office tasks. It would be wonderful to work together at a local coffee shop one day a week.

This is a paid position through August and can be extended through October. This position may be ideal for a high school senior, or college student. However anyone is welcome to apply! Hours will be 10-12 hours per week. You will be asked to provide your own laptop that you are willing to use for this position.

If you are a beginning photographer this is a great way for you to build your portfolio and learn more about the business. If you are curious about the industry, interested in design, creativity, writing, or marketing this could also be a fun job for you!

If you are interested in becoming my summer assistant please send me a detailed email at lisamimsphotography@gmail.com explaining your interest in this position and your availability.

2016 Weddings in Review

Wow, I honestly can't believe that there are only a few more hours left in 2016! This year I was fortunate enough to document 22 weddings with my couples. I also went full time as a photographer in June. It's not an easy decision to step out and run your own business as your main gig. But there is something so rewarding about finding your passion and making it your career. If you are on the fence about making this decision for yourself I encourage you to step out in faith and take the chance for your happiness.  I am so thankful for all the sweet couples that trusted me to capture memories for them this year. I am already looking forward to wedding season in 2017! I hope you enjoyed some of my 2016 wedding portrait favorites. Happy New Year to you!

Staunton Newborn Sweet Penelope Jane

Staunton Newborn Sweet Penelope Jane

Penelope Jane arrived in time for Christmas this year. Her nursery looked like it was straight out of pottery barn. Her plush blankets and fuzzy white carpet made great backdrops for photos. Penelope was alert and merry the entire session. Newborn sessions like this warm my heart.

For me, newborn sessions are probably one of the most challenging portrait sessions that I offer, but also the most rewarding. As a photographer you never quite know what type of session you are going to have when you walk into your couple's home. There are so many emotions that your primary client can have on the day of the session.... a newborn (your primary client) is sometimes sleepy, awake and happy, hungry, or plain upset. I tell new parents that newborn sessions require a lot of patience. It truly is like a box of chocolates and you never know what you're going to get! There are a few things that I have found helpful when preparing for a newborn session I narrowed it down to 5...

1. Have your couple TURN UP the heat. Most of the time babies aren't dressed wamrly for newborn sessions. You would probably cry too if you were only wearing a diaper ;)

2. Ask your clients to prepare clean spaces for the session, and collect items they would like to use ahead of time. I LOVE fuzzy white blankets and primarily white swaddles. Most of the time when babies are in baskets there are secretly bath towels underneath to prop them up. Ask your couple to have towels handy. When the baby is happy you want to be shooting, not wasting time looking for items that you need to make a set work.

3. Tell your clients that it's okay if the session last a little longer than anticipated. Sometimes babies need to eat in the middle of the shoot. Remember you are creating art, there's really no need to be in a rush. However don't stay all day ;) Typically newborn sessions for me last one hour to two hours on the longer end.

4. Know when the baby is tired. At that point it's time to try a new setting. If a baby is starting to get fussy or uncomfortable while you're trying to get a certain picture of them, I always suggest getting the parents to pick up the baby. Try taking a few photos of the parents holding him or her until they relax.

5. Try to shoot near open window light, and schedule your session at a time when the most light is available.

There's a lot of beauty in this world, but for me capturing a new family is one of the most precious and beautiful sessions.

Please add any ideas or suggestions in the comments below about what you find helpful during newborn sessions.

Big Meadows, Virginia Morgan and Zach Engaged

Big Meadows, Virginia Morgan and Zach Engaged

We weren't sure if we were going to get this engagement session in on the day we scheduled for weeks in advance, because Morgan and Zach were on their way back from a wedding in South Carolina. They were troopers though, they ended up going home quickly, and getting ready; then got back in the car with me to drive to Big Meadows on Skyline Drive. It was SO worth it! I know they were tired, but it was a beautiful setting for pictures. We walked through some old trails then into the open field at Big Meadows around sunset. Morgan is such a beautiful woman, and Zach clearly adores her. I love the emotions that we captured at their engagement session. Their June wedding is going to be fantastic!

The Peaks of Otter, Virginia, Ashley and Ben Engaged

The Peaks of Otter, Virginia, Ashley and Ben Engaged

We met at Peaks of Otter for Ashley and Ben's engagement session. There were so many pretty locations. Ashley and Ben brought their black lab Hunter along for the session. This sweet couple is getting married next May, at Sorella Farms; and rumor has it there might be an ice cream truck at their wedding!!!

Delfosse Vineyards and Winery, Charlottesville, Virginia Erica and Dustin Engaged

Delfosse Vineyards and Winery, Charlottesville, Virginia Erica and Dustin Engaged

I am so happy to be working with Erica and Dusty! Erica runs her own photography business, so I am honored that she and Dusty would choose to work with me! Erica and Dusty have such a fun relationship. They are constantly laughing and goofing off together. It made their engagement session carefree. We explored Delfosse Vineyard near Charlottesville for their session. It literally felt like we were in Italy for the night. It is a beautiful location. Erica and Dusty are planning an outdoor wedding next May. I know Erica is going to have a beautiful wedding with lots of pretty details!

Eagles Nest Airport, Waynesboro, Virginia, Kasey and Josh Save the Date

Eagles Nest Airport, Waynesboro, Virginia, Kasey and Josh Save the Date

A few weeks ago I met Kasey and Josh at the airport to take a few photos for their Save the Date card. They are planning a small destination wedding in Saint Thomas next May. All of the props (no pun intended) made this session so fun! The large trunk pictured was used by one of Kasey's family members years ago when they moved to America - pretty neat! Their tropical wedding is going to be so beautiful!
